| Rating: 3/4 Maudlin, quiet, and natural, 'Bull' captures, with a raw edge, the lives of a marginalized society within a marginalized society, and how human connection can still grow therein. The people around her do not pay much attention to Kris, but she is a close observer, if not always able to understand what she is observing. |, June 3, 2020 Her nods and headshakes are tiny. | Top Critics (11) He’s withholding on a good day and surly on all the others. Harvard, who was found in an open casting call, is a striking new face in American cinema — her eyes dart about with fiery determination and fear, but when she finally gets a chance to smile, it comes as a revelation.

Silverstein’s naturalism-by-the-numbers approach would feel awfully reductive if it weren’t carried by a pair of astounding performances that hover on a plane of their own, generating unique chemistry that finds its emotional center with time. But the film doesn’t spark the way other Southern stories do — be it the more amplified world of “Beasts of the Southern Wild” or Micah Magee’s like-minded “Petting Zoo,” which delivers the nuances Silverstein never quite achieves here.

Each character is very distinct except Crystal, who is developing and burgeoning. Now playing. As the title suggests, Kris takes an interest in this line of work, tagging along to watch Abe in action at black rodeo events after he gets fired from the PBR — just one more injustice in a movie that depicts, with zero indignation but no shortage of empathy, how it feels to be on the disadvantaged end of how opportunity is apportioned in America. First there is the warm affection that could be a mother chatting casually with her daughters over breakfast. Coming Soon. “Bull” belongs to an unexpected new sub-genre designed to complicate traditional understandings of cowboy culture in America, from Gabriel Mascaro’s dazzling portrait of Brazilian riders in “Neon Bull” to the prison rehabilitation story “The Mustang” and Andrew Haigh’s teen runaway tale “Lean on Pete.” But all of these entries hover in the shadow of Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider,” the majestic portrait of an indigenous man whose injuries in the ring take him out of the game, and in effect, into an existential crisis. I have no idea how it got high ratings or what the movie is ultimately about, maybe people will call me dumb or say I didn't 'get it' but ultimately movies are supposed to be entertaining whether through action or drama or comedy etc, instead I found this emotionless, lacking any drama and except for the one 'clown' scene certainly not funny at all. Her recklessness is strangely detached, as if she’s going with the flow, as if her fate has been predetermined. She picks fights in school, sneaks down to the river to flirt with the boys, and breaks into the house of an African-American neighbor to host an impromptu party with a bunch of kids from her class. With Rob Morgan, Amber Havard, Yolonda Ross, Keira Bennett. Coming Soon. The filmmaker doesn’t intrude because that would seem like colluding with the Fates, and the Fates are spurious, constricting, anti-life. Yet. "Bull" is reminiscent of quietly observed, beautifully performed recent films about lonely people finding some solace in animals like "The Mustang" and "Lean on Pete." Like the film … FAQ This evocative coming-of-age story, where black rodeos in rural Texas help an impoverished 14-year-old girl find her potential, stuffs conventional ingredients into a wondrous vision of life on the edge. Rob Morgan was great in this film but im sorry- this is it for me... No story no message no objective. Kris is determined to get it. In a near-abandoned subdivision west of Houston, a wayward teen runs headlong into her equally willful and unforgiving neighbor, an aging bullfighter who's seen his best days in the arena; it's a collision that will change them both. If you're a mature adult who appreciates a good story, keep reading. It’s harrowing, , but cathartic for just the same reasons, and she eventually wants a piece of the action. It preserves an entire world and the fragile people within it. Abe and Kris are fascinating enigmas who suppress their frustrations until they’re forced to lash out. Just below that it reads "Ticket Confirmation#:" followed by a 10-digit number. “Bull” premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard. You can't help but feel sympathy for her but also recognise her stoic resolve. Your AMC Ticket Confirmation# can be found in your order confirmation email. Those stakes are heightened here, since “Bull’s” 14-year-old protagonist, Kris (Amber Havard), has no father to speak of and a mom (Sara Albright) behind bars; she hangs out with delinquents and lives in an impoverished community — all factors that put this particular youth “at risk.” But the story feels lean, and most of the cast, while convincing, don’t leap off the screen the way the ensemble in an Andrea Arnold movie does (the British director’s “Wasp” and “Fish Tank” are almost certainly among Silverstein’s top influences). I kept waiting for something to happen, anything, a heart beat... but nothing, except crickets. Her neighbor Abe (Rob Morgan) sees her as a nuisance because her dog gets into his chicken coop. I thought this was a little slow - still waiting for the plot to be revealed. All Critics (86) Low-key, naturalistic drama with a lot of familiar beats whose strength is in depicting a child at the crossroads. As these conflicting worlds come to a head, “Bull” mines poetry from the Greek chorus of evocative bull-riding antics, some of which end in jarring, violent developments. The patient, observant camera captures the sensitive performances by Havard and Morgan, and they are never less than eloquent and honest. Silverstein captures that liminal moment when a young teenager is beginning to have some adult understanding but still clings to vestigial remnants of the magical thinking that she can be different. Annie Silverstein’s Bull doesn’t jerk you around. Too often, “Bull” leaves us on the outside of what Kris is going through, peering through windows that reflect what we already know about her experience. Even when the movie overplays its central metaphor (bull-riding connotations crop up in both a sex scene and an argument), the pathos of its two contrasting figures maintain an underlying authenticity.

It reminds me a little of Winter's Bone, although the lead actor isn't quite as impressive as Jennifer Lawrence, she does hold you engaged as her story plays out. Nonetheless, the prospect of an inspirational, “Go for It” movie centering on a 14-year-old girl’s attempt to escape her horrible homelife by apprenticing with a mangled ex–bull rider seemed perverse in the extreme — until I saw the film, which isn’t that at all. But there’s something physically right about the way she sits atop the rodeo’s practice (mechanical) bull.
Annie Silverstein’s rough-edged debut, “Bull,” begins the same way her short film “Skunk” did, with an unruly dog chewing on the carcass of the creature it has caught.
